Folktronica-Iberian-Women-Glitched-Pop

" Old rhythms with new beats "

Do you have memories of old folk songs from your region or country? Sounds of ancient instruments, like the lute, fiddle or concertina are connected to our brains and hearts, even if you don’t know it. As soon as we hear them, it triggers something inside us. Portuguese musician Ana Lua Caiano grew up with those instruments and memories, but from a young age she learned the piano, and later on, she went to study jazz, gradually drifting further from that past.

But during the pandemic, when most of us started making bread, or just watched TV for hours, Ana Lua Caiano decided to make her own music. All she had was a bunch of instruments like the bombo or the adufe (iberian squared tambourine), a synthesizer and a loop station. So she grabbed her smartphone and recorded her ideas. All of those memories from traditional music started surfacing, entangled with electronic sounds, and strange poems. Rhythmic patterns grounded in old times, bringing her soft voice upfront and exploring glitches and the silence.

If you go back to recent years, we can find similarities with the work of Björk, Go_A or Tanxugueiras, especially with this female approach and artistic vision that moves beyond the plain of music. Ana Lua Caiano is the kind of artist that will bring all her soul, and blend it with old souls, producing something that sounds sharp and relevant in the present and future, too.
