Quirky indie

" A captivating mix of carefree alt-pop and studied indie that hits both marks "

Love him or loathe him, you can’t disagree that Quentin Tarantino is responsible for some of cinema’s most iconic scenes. Ditto his midas touch with certain classic songs and bands (Stealers Wheel! Urge Overkill!). Czech quartet I Love You Honey Bunny fall into the former category, taking their name from Tim Roth declaring his undying affection to Amanda Plummer before they rob a diner in ‘Pulp Fiction’, but their sound is no retro pastiche or rock throwback. Thoroughly modern indie pop is their stock in trade, sprinkled with electronic elements and the occasional dark swirl – making them one of this year’s Eurosonic must-sees.

Two albums into their career and with a third on the way, the band have clocked up well over 400 shows throughout Europe and Canada, plus numerous festival appearances. And it’s not just fans who’ve fallen for their quirky, intoxicating tunes – 2023’s ‘We Just Had A Wonderful Time’ was co-produced by none other than Klangstof’s Koen van der Wardt and Blood Red ShoesSteven Ansell. Diving headfirst into topics such as mental illness, the workings of the mind, and the effect of Covid lockdowns on society, the record also proved that their writing chops were every bit the equal of their ear for melody and feel for groove and rhythm.

Listening to their work, one can detect elements of Motorik grooves, post-punk, wide-screen pop, and indie thrills aplenty. You’ll find clever wordplay too. “A cheeky stage presence!” proclaims their own bio, and while “iconic” might be a bit of a stretch for now, they’re on the right track.
