There are a bunch of new kids on the block in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, and Angelou is one of their leaders. She would probably smirk at such a description, but it’s quite accurate. In the last couple of years, several artists gained traction online, creating tunes that use elements of pop, R&B, hip hop and electronic music. Together with Free Finga and Keanu Blunt, Angelou is one of the biggest names carried by this new wave of Lithuanian pop.

Although her biggest break came in 2021, with the release of debut full-length LP ‘Fazė’ (Phase), Andželika Petrauskaitė (that’s her real name) has been making music for a while. Born in the Lithuanian port of Klaipėda, she went to study in the U.K. and released a bunch of records in English, collaborating with local musicians. Lithuanians also took notice, but it is fair to say that Angelou really captured listeners’ interest after moving back to her home country.

Her debut EP ‘Vision A’ was released in 2017, and the second one, ‘All In Good Time’, followed in 2019. However, it was her decision to switch to Lithuanian that delivered a surge in popularity. In 2021, she was nominated twice for Lithuanian M.A.M.A. music awards (in the Breakthrough of the Year and Progressive Pop Artist of the Year categories) – a well-deserved recognition.

When it comes to music, Angelou describes herself as an alternative R&B singer-songwriter that has always been drawn to emotional music. With nods to ’70s soul, ’90s R&B and modern electronica, she’s truly one of a kind – and fans who have already streamed her songs millions of times seem to agree.
