" A modern mermaid entwining magnetic vocals with experimental music "
Pinning Daniela Pes to a musical genre is next to impossible. Class of 1992, born in Tempo Pausania, Sardinia to a family of musicians, this contemporary mermaid is an eclectic and multifaceted talent. She studied Jazz singing at the Sassari School of Jazz, and won a scholarship to the Nuoro Jazz Summer Seminars directed by the internationally renowned musician and producer Paolo Fresu, yet her sound meanders between traditional Sardinian folk, electronic and research music.
After her unlikely start, which involved setting to music and interpreting the poems of the 18th-century Gallurese poet Don Gavino Pes, and earned her an Andrea Parodi award in 2017 and a Nuovo Imaie Award at Musicultura in 2018, Daniela finally gave birth to her first solo album, composed of seven tracks in which she sings in a completely made up idiom mixing fragments of Italian, archaic Gallurese and disjointed syllabes. Released in 2023 by Tanca Records under the production of the esteemed Sardinian artist Jacopo Incani aka Iosonouncane, her first effort took three years to complete and, saluted as one of the best Italian albums to be released this year, was deservedly awarded with the prestigious Tenco Prize for Best Debut Work.
Daniela’s live shows feature her on stage alone twisting the knobs of her Microfreak Arturia, and enchanting the audience with her powerful voice, or sometimes accompanied by Maria Giulia degli Amori (percussions and synth) and Marù Barucco (synths, bass, electronics). A truly mesmerizing moment, and as a result her shows nearly always sold out.
