" Bold, euphoric dancefloor-fillers and sundown anthems "
In the world of DJs, goofy names abound – Com Truise, Joy Orbison, Rad Pitt. But the brains behind DJ Seinfeld – Swede Armand Jakobsson – has defied expectations and blazed a trail across electronic music. So named because he became obsessed with the comedy show after a breakup and moving to Barcelona, he was an early influence in the lo-fi electronica movement a few years back; melancholic house, warm, hazy production, and a slow-burn analogue vibe were the hallmarks of both his debut EP, ‘Season 1’, and his first album proper, 2017’s ‘Time Spent Away From U’.
But the new album ‘Mirrors’, released late last year, marks a shift – bigger, bolder, brighter. Named after a quote from Jakobsson’s favourite writer, Argentinian novelist Julio Cortázar, it’s a more upbeat, optimistic collection, shot through with crisp, smooth, polished production. ‘Song For The Lonely’ is a proper club banger, while ‘U Already Know’ is an Italo-tinged summer anthem with just a hint of funk. “Joy” seems to be Jakobsson’s default setting now, with Day-Glo synths, groovy basslines, pounding drums, and relentless energy fuelling his new work.
His newfound euphoria is tailor made for sunset festival slots and huge dancefloors, bringing a sense of bliss and transcendence to the masses. Already booked to close Primavera Sound’s Ray-Ban stage in May, there are plenty more live dates in the pipeline – and he’s apparently working with esteemed music and lighting designers to devise a brand-new spectacular. It’s all a far cry from his introspective, intimate early work, but it’s also the sound of a producer exploring his talent and fulfilling his huge potential.
