" Soundtrack to a love crime "
There’s a touch of Lynchian flavour to the latest singles by Dlina volny, a band that comes from the rough reality of Belarus. What started out as another synthpop/cold wave project from the post-Soviet area has now established a solid image of mysterious electronic fairy tales, supported by short film style music videos about love, death and the fragile reality of our emotions. Some bands just have this cinematic odour in their music, and Dlina Volny is exactly that.
There are three members of Dlina Volny: vocalist Masha Zinevitch, Ales Shishlo on keyboards, and Vad Mikutski on guitars. Since their first EP ‘Neizmerima’ (2016), they’ve released one bilingual album, ‘Mechty’ (2018), and on the 5th, November 2021 a second album called ‘Dazed’. A sign of their growing prestige, the band won Hennessy’s ‘All I Need’ grant in 2021.
It’s not only the song ‘Redrum’ that nods to dark overtones, referencing the abandoned hotel from Stephen King’s world of horrors. It’s also the vibe referencing glamorous and venomous women of ‘Mulholland drive’ by David Lynch. If you look at those characters appearing in songs like ‘Bipolar’ and ‘Tomorrow’. There are theatrical postures, neon lightning, and cold, cold eyes. But don’t let those Western thriller aesthetics fool you: despite the English lyrics, the band insists the Soviet legacy and the atmosphere of their hometown is their main inspirations. You can discover this strong connection between Minsk and the song ‘Whatever Happens Next’, one that illustrates the local tensions of 2020.
