Visionary hyperpop

" The most inventive newcomer on the French hyperpop scene "

During the pandemic, we suddenly found ourselves with a lot of time on our hands. For many, that bred creativity.. One of the very few positive consequences of the Covid period, behind all the disasters that the virus brought along, was that many artists could at last take their time to write songs and imagine new sonic textures. Éloïse Leau, shortened as ELOI, was one of them. The former art student from Paris released her first EP during lockdown, followed by a second EP in 2022 and finally her debut album, ‘Dernier Orage’ (“The Last Storm”), in 2023.

With her, the French music scene has gained a new disciple in one of music’s most innovative genres:  hyperpop, a subdivision of electronic music with futuristic sounds, a Nineties aesthetic and pitched vocals.

Éloi clearly identifies her influences: A. G. Cook, the English producer and songwriter who founded the label PC Music in 2013, Rebeka Warrior, the French electro-punk icon who was one half of the band Sexy Sushi, the shoegaze movement, several French artists like Sébastien Tellier and Odezenne, and, more surprisingly, the classical composers Debussy and Chopin. We could add that she mixes R’n’B and synthpop, electronic rhythms and pop melodies, in her wonderful cross-bred tracks – classifying her music under one category would be an impossible task. The best way to discover what she does is to go and see her live, and the summer of 2024 will give us more than one occasion: Éloi is going to play at a number of European festivals including Europavox in Clermont-Ferrand. See you there!
