" Rough, fresh, chaotic punk "
Rage, weirdness, melody, sass and swing – all these elements fit within Frenzee’s anarcho-punk style. Born in Melbourne and raised in Greece, the three siblings, Apollonia on vocals, Antonis on guitar, and Nikos on drums, are well known as the new generation of the Xylouris musical family playing traditional music from the island of Crete. Only their outfit offers unapologetically scuddy noiserock with punk-informed insolence that presents as a near-literal frenzy.
In anticipation of the act’s sophomore album, their singles ‘Infection’ and ‘Rushed’ contain enough swirling distortion and snare-thrashing to indicate their hardcore grounding. The trio offer a fresh look at the various waves of punk from 70s onwards, adding fun and social commentary to their recipe of punk chaos.
Their eponymous, ferociously confident debut album was launched in 2022, running at a mere 18 minutes. It became the first and defining document of a band exploding out of a tiny local scene into wider international recognition, with the band touring Greece, Australia and Europe.
Apollonia sounds like Kathleen Hanna with an Aussie accent auditioning for Queens of the Stone Age, making every syllable land hard. Antonis and Nikos make for a powerful instrumental duo, filling each track with rough but entertaining guitar riffs and percussion (take, for example, ‘Frenzy’ and ‘Fire in My Gut’, on which these two deliver an adventurous sound close to Black Sabbath and The Hellacopters). Frenzee aren’t reviving punk or anything else – they’re possessed with the spirit of it, and damn does it sound sweet and sour!
