" The most exquisite Spanish Bedroom Pop artist "
There are artists who seek out their own course and seem to drift in the middle of the ocean, and the vast majority of them are shipwrecked. This is not the case with the musical project of Jordi Arroyo, the real name of Ghouljaboy. The musical history of the Jerez-born artist was something loosely framed within so-called urban music. He started out with the publication of ‘El Rascal‘ in 2020, which feels like decades ago, by the urban music label La Vendición, a label founded by Yung Beef, La Zowi, and Kaydy Cain, among others. His music garnered a great reception by the music press and by fans of the genre in Spain, but Ghouljaboy wanted more, so he broke with all that and ventured into post punk, back to his roots and the days of his childhood, then continued with city pop and dreamcore.
The musical freshness and his lyrics, where he stands as a narrator of current affairs, raises expectations around his next album. Few songs are as exciting as ‘ei bro‘, which feels like an accurate picture of the reality of today’s youth, both bleak and hopeful. His music is hypnotic, riddled with a thousand references including things as disparate as surf music and shoegaze. It seems impossible that he is the same man who signed off on the danceable ‘Videodrome‘, a song that sits between two worlds, the trap of the past and the indie rock of the present. Aesthetically he adds a very personal stamp with his own brilliant clip work. Ghouljaboy is unclassifiable, but he is necessary.
