" Something wicked comes this way "
It’s pretty clear that when your home country is shrouded in darkness and cold half the time, chirpy, carefree tunes aren’t going to be the first things that come to mind when choosing a music career. It’s a big part of why metal and alternative sounds have such a firm foothold in Scandinavia, but even in the pervasive darkness of that scene, Musta Huone find a way to turn the unease up to 11. The Finnish four-piece, whose name translates to the Lynchian “Black Room”, make driven post-punk music with experimental fragments crashing through into a tense atmosphere, the musical equivalent of walking down a lonely path in a storm, glancing over your shoulder and seeing a dark figure outlined by a flash of lightning on the hilltop.
If that’s making you hesitant about giving them a spin, don’t be. After all, horror films are a massively successful genre precisely because they provide cathartic release with their jump scares and chilling settings, and it’s no different with Musta Huone. Yes, there is darkness here, but not expressed in mournful dirges or melancholic musings over primordial riffs. Instead, the bold, experimentally-inclined band rewrite Finnish stereotypes with a contemporary approach, their insistent noise freakouts standing out not just in their native country, but amid the broader post-punk landscape as well.
Crafting an eclectic, unpredictable sound from the members’ varied backgrounds, Musta Huone have established themselves as one of the most promising young bands in the country, winning international acclaim with their 2023 album ‘Valosaasteen Sekaan’. Whether you’re a fan of the odd jump scare or not, give it a whirl – it’ll have you on the edge of your seat throughout, but you won’t regret it.
