" If Britney and Kevin Parker had kids "
I’ve never been to Wyoming, the North American state, but my first thoughts about that place are its reputation for country music, and Kanye West. Nana Lourdes had the same idea.
The debut album by Nana Lourdes, aka Adriana Caldas de Barros, took inspiration from watching an episode of ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ where they go to Kanye West ranch and herd cows. That crazy mix between the very artificial atmosphere of a reality TV show and the raw nature of Wyoming, drove Nana’s inspiration.
She grew up in a very rural area of Portugal, in a village of less than 800 people. But she was totally connected to music, dancing to songs by Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani or LeAnn Rimes. At the same time she discovered more soulful moods with Kevin Parker’s Tame Impala, Fleetwood Mac, and even Dolly Parton.
For her editorial debut, she imagined a couple driving from California to Wyoming, and falling out of love. Like all good road movies, it starts with a shot of sunrise, while trying to contemplate life. Then… An epic guitar solo bursts out and almost makes us cry, warning us of what’s about to come.
From then on, you drive around from sunny California to the mountains, with the top off, listening to ‘808 and Heartbreak’, ‘Currents’ or ‘Golden Hour’. It’s amazing and weird to imagine Nana’s writing and recording this whole album, alone, in her parents’ house during the pandemic. From the fat bass lines, fuzzy guitars, groovy keyboards, she ends with a royalty-like pop feel.
