A dark Bulgarian voice

" Dark-piano-electronic-ambient-music "

When we hear ‘Bulgaria’, it transports us directly to those folk choirs that evoke stories and people of another time. To those tales written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm or Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy. Some dark and gloomy characters, wandering around old forests, lurking in the shadows.

Niandraz’s music seems to come from the same kind of background. Mixing her voice, either in Bulgarian or in English, with piano, and electronics to fuse in a very ethereal sound. Her debut album is entitled ‘Sumrak’ (‘Twilight’ in english), and is crammed full of melancholy songs, with tense atmospherics, and daunting melodies.

Hold my hand in silence, As we are burning down. Close my eyes of violence, As we sink in sound, she sings.

On some tracks, we can hear a distorted guitar, breaking the sound waves. That is probably a way for Niandraz to get closer to John Frusciante, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist that’s touted as a huge influence on her, and the inspiration behind her alias (just look into Frusciante’s solo discography). At the same time that Niandraz evokes the past in her music, it also seems to portray the future, like in Blade Runner or Mad Max. Maybe someday we will look at the twilight, and remember Niandraz. If anything, it’s hard to think of this music as from our current time.
