Electronic dream pop
" A wave in which you will want to rock "
Combining her delicate voice with the avant-garde, danceable electronic backdrop of producer ODDLIQUOR, Ona Mafalda now claims a prominent place in the music scene singing in Spanish after a stint as a pop singer-songwriter in English. Very comfortable with a sound that neither avoids the mainstream nor artistic risk, the singer born in London and based in Madrid has already touched stardom as the opening act for Coldplay at two massive concerts by Chris Martin‘s band in Barcelona, a nice closing of a circle, since it was when attending a Coldplay concert in London with her mother at the age of 13 that she decided to become a musician.
Of aristocratic origin – she is the daughter of Prince Kyril and granddaughter of King Simeon of Bulgaria -, Mafalda decided to add ‘Ona’ to her artistic name. It’s a feminine word that means ‘wave’ in Mallorcan and pays tribute to her origin on her mother’s side – the former model Rosario Nadal. Besides, ‘Ona’ denotes the idea of fluidity that she gives us in her songs.
Indeed, the tracks of ‘Ona‘ (2023), her first album after the EP ‘Bailando sin sentido‘ (2021), are like Mediterranean beach waves. Most of the time the atmospherics are smooth and caressing, but from time to time they grow in intensity and make us dance. It’s easy to imagine yourself playing to this musical background, jumping from cliffs or scuba diving and, after witnessing a gorgeous sunset, ending up in a night club dancing to the beats of ‘Calor‘ or ‘Mala suerte‘.
