Fresh Queer R&B

" Conscious songwriting meets R&B and electronica "

Italo-Congolese singer, songwriter and producer Giulia Grispino aka Sans Soucis (a nickname their grandmother gave them when they were a child) was born and raised in Modena listening to Italian classics like Mina and Lucio Battisti, congolese rumba’s stars like Koffi Olomide or Franco and US’ R&B queens like Beyoncé and Rihanna. With such a diverse musical background adding to a lovely voice, it’s no wonder at the age of 20 they decided to move to London to study Contemporary music. Here Giulia bought their first guitar, discovered artists such as Lianne La Havas, Solange and Little Dragon and, most of all, rediscovered their identity as a queer, black person of mixed heritage.

The result of these new music influences and awareness was their 2019 debut EP, four tracks of conscious experimental folk titled ‘The Lover’. Unfortunately, just when UK media were starting to notice them, Coronavirus broke, but Grispino didn’t sit on their hands. The fruits of two years of isolation were a touching Italian song about borders (‘Confini’, 2020) and a new EP of alt R&B (‘On Time For Her’, 2021), including an uptempo track about colonisation ‘Games’ featuring a contribution from Giulia’s biggest inspiration: former Italian Minister for Integration Cécile Kyenge, their mother.

Though this second effort grabbed the attention of media like The Guardian and BBC, the real twist in Giulia’s career came between 2022 and 2023, first with the Beyoncesque single ‘All Over This Party’ which brought them among Spotify’s artists featured on billboards in Times Square, then with a string of dance-oriented singles: ‘Merchants’ about their newfound identity, ‘I Know Your Present’ in which they elaborate their childhood racial trauma and ‘Lost When I’m Around You’ about the stereotypes connected to PMS and periods.

Following these releases, which will eventually convey in their first LP, empowered by their newly found gender fluid identity and their socially engaged lyrics delivered through a groundbreaking eclectic sound, in 2023 Giulia was recognized with amazing achievements such as a Music Moves Europe Awards‘ Grand Jury Prize and a UK Music Video Award in the ‘Best R&B/soul video – newcomer’ category. And we’re sure there’s plenty more yet to come.
